Lack of Dog Diversity in Baby Clothes

Now that we are pretty sure we’re having a boy, I’ve been checking out baby clothes and such. Naturally, I look at all the dog stuff out there and I have a major beef with the selection…IT’S ALL THE SAME DAMN DOG!! Case and point:

Always brown with floppy ears and most have a spot over one eye. Is there a dog out there that actually looks like that? Where’s the love for the other breeds?

I can just see it now, “OH! Anne LOVES dogs! We should get her dog stuff for her baby.”

Yeah…not so much. Now if I receive items with a chihuahua, or an Italian greyhound, or a Jack Russell terrier then fantastic. But from what I’ve seen it appears there is a monopoly on the dog-themed baby clothes industry and the whackadoo at the top calling the shots thinks there is ONLY one dog breed in existence.

My husband has been quoted as saying, “we can either get another dog or have kids”. Well…not having kids is not an option, so I had put the idea of getting a third dog out of my mind. The thing is that lately he’s been saying things that lead me to believe that he would be open to the idea of another dog. Today he mentioned that he is facinated by italian greyhounds. I’ve always wanted one! The only catch is that they can be fragile (not great if we want to start a family) and they can be tough to potty train. BUT….then I found this little sweetheart!!!!

She’s an italian greyhound/jack russell terrier mix…making her a little more hardy and hopefully super intelligent. So now I’m convinced that this little girl they call “Reds” is supposed to be mine…now to convince the h-band. Cross your fingers. To be continued…

UPDATE!!!!! (January 5, 2009 at 8:36pm) The verdict is in…and he said yes!!

FIrst of all, let me publicly state how amazing and supportive my husband, Don is. I’m pleasantly surprised about how excited he is to rescue our third dog! Secondly, props to Petfinder. I’m all for making rescuing easier and Petfinder does just that. It allows people to type in the breed of dog, age, gender, etc. that they are looking for and then it searches all the shelters and rescues in your zip code area. Thirdly, a special thanks to my Twitter community for supporting me through this process. I got some very creative ideas for persuading my husband if needed (thanks SmilinNursAnnie!) as well as some great name ideas (thanks to ExpressiveP for suggesting the name Stella…that’s the winner!) And lastly, let the happy dance begin!!
