I was sleeping soundly the other night and Don (my husband) woke me up to tell me that he thought Stella had eaten a rubber band because it was in her poop.  I couldn’t figure out where she would have gotten one because we really don’t have any in the house.  A little bit later Don woke me up again and said, “Um…I don’t think they are rubber bands because they just moved.”

A closer inspected revealed that we were dealing with a case of parasitic worms.  (Don’t worry…Don suggested a visual aide for you but I vetoed the idea).

I took Stella to the vet in the morning with a sample and sure enough it was round worms.   Not only were they worms, but adult round worms and the vet thought that she had been infected for several months.  For those of you who don’t know, Stella was surrendered from a puppymill to a shelter in January and I found her through Petfinder.com.

More than likely she got the worms from the poor conditions in the puppymill.  I feel lucky that it’s very treatable, but the thing that really gets me furious is knowing that Stella’s mom and other dogs who are still at the puppymill most likely have it too and are not getting treated.

Yet another reason why I hate puppymills/commercial breeding.

Yuck!! I can usually stomach just about anything when it comes to gross dog stuff but roundworms make me queasy. I hate parasites! I hope you are able to get rid of them quickly!

  2. So sorry to hear that Stella has worms! I hope that she gets better very quickly.
