I’m very lucky to have a husband who has such great love for our dogs. I couldn’t be with someone who didn’t like dogs. I know that there are people out there who just aren’t dog people and don’t want to own dogs. That’s fine – I prefer that people don’t own dogs if they don’t like them! It really ticks me off when people feel like they should get a dog for their kids even though they don’t want one. If you don’t like dogs then don’t get one! But I digress.
This picture resonates with me because I believe that I come as a package. Not that friends and family have to go gaga over my dogs or want to hold them and love on them…BUT…there have been some people in my life who outright put down my dogs or the fact that we own dogs. Some will turn up their noses at everything we say about our dogs, about dog hair, or the fact that we let our dogs sleep with us, or that we have to pick up potty in the backyard, etc.
When you love someone, you don’t put down something that they love the most. Just because you don’t understand why I love my dogs or relate does not mean that you need be judgmental. My dogs are my kids. They are part of our family. I could do without comments like, “well those aren’t REAL dogs” or “I could fry them up and have them for supper”. Now I know how to take a joke, and sometimes these things are said in jest, but sometimes they aren’t…especially when it’s a constant theme. I’m sure these same people wouldn’t constantly put down or wrinkle their noses at my soon to be baby when he’s here. So don’t do it to my dogs either.
Has anyone else had issues with this? Could you be in a close friendship or relationship with someone who just flat out didn’t like dogs?

My MIL does not like any animals. Thinks my dogs are dirty and doesn’t like “those animals” in the house with the baby. It is not fun. But my dogs are more important to me than she is so boo on her.
I do have issues with the exact same thing. Drives me insane. People look at my Mario and act like I own a rat. Or like he’s something to pound on. It makes me sad and hurt, mostly on behalf of him. He’s so patient with little kids, and loves everyone. My extended family loves him for the most part, but my uncle can not stand dogs. Guess what the kids now have? 3 dogs. THREE! but mine is still not allowed at their house.
It’s ok with me, though. it’s the easiest way to get out of there on holidays. “I have to go take care of Mario.”
What is it with the rat comments? I get that too. I agree…they are so sweet and wouldn’t hurt a fly so it’s hurtful to hear people say things like that.
And I thought I was the only one. It really bugs me that they say that he looks like a rat. Not that rats are ugly, but he’s a DOG! That’s like saying someone’s baby looks like it has elephantitis! Well, to me anyway.
