We have a dilemma in our house. Stella NEEDS to be walked/run everyday or she’s a crazy crackhead. Problem is, she is a master at getting out of a harness. I found this out the hard way one day when bringing all three dogs to the vet. As I was putting the chihuahuas in the car and hooking them into their doggy seatbelts, Stella backed out of her harness and started running around our yard. It is so scary for me to have her loose because my biggest fear would be for her to get hit by a car.
So…Stella is a little Houdini when it comes to harnesses. We have really nice harnesses by Puppia currently that work great for the chihuahuas. We use one for Stella too, but Don has found a way to rig it up so that she can’t escape as easily. So this is a little video that he made before taking her for a walk. We are on a quest to find a great harness that she can’t get out of.

OOOps I guess you did post…today’s the day. I can feel it. Believe it or not my Chocolate lab is the same way. She can get out of anything, anywhere. How she does it? Who knows.
Do you worry at all about walking your small dogs with a regular collar attached to the leash? My Shi Tsu is crazy on walks and she does whatever she wants. When we walk her with a harness she doesn’t care when we try to restrain her but if we walk her with a collar she pays more attention when the leash gets puller but then she coughs. Does the collar/harness rig help with control without straining on their necks? Plus the added security of course.
My Yorkie is the same way. He has been a Puppia dog since the day I got him but he could always sneak out of his harness. The pet boutique in my town started selling iPuppyOne products (I think they merged with Puppia but I’m unsure) and they sell a harness that has adjustable chest and neck pieces – he hasn’t slipped out since. Good luck!
[...] chihuahuas fit into harnesses much better than Stella does. Stella is a harness Houdini. We’ve rigged up a harness/collar/two leash combo that works for now, but a regular harness [...]
