All three of my dogs love toys, but Stella gets the award for dog most obsessed with toys.  I think it’s the Jack Russell Terrier in her-she needs to be both physically and mentally stimulated more than Zoey and Leroy do.  I love finding “keep busy” toys to keep her occupied.  Enter the Tough Turtle Puzzle toy by the Kyjen Company.  The big turtle is soft, but the shell is made out of tougher material.  The baby turtles have squeakers inside them and can be hidden within the turtle shell that is then closed with velcro.  You show your dog that there are squeaker turtles inside the shell and then close it up.  Then it’s a challenge for your dog to figure out how to get to the squeaky baby turtle toys.

.

.
Here are some pictures of Stella and Leroy trying to figure it out!

Stella has finally figured out how to get the little turtles out and squeak them.  It’s nice though because it takes her awhile and it gets some of that mental energy out of her.

Kyjen wants your dog to try the Tough Turtle too!  We will be giving one Tough Turtle away to a reader who comments below and tells us more about their dog/dogs.  Good luck everyone!  We will close the commenting down on Thursday, Oct. 8th at midnight and announce the winner Friday, Oct. 9th.

  1. Stella is funny…I can see her stealing all the babies toys and you chasing her around the house. LOL
My little Scorpion would love this turtle. He goes crazy for squeak toys. Of course the turtle looks like it may be bigger than he is :)

  2. Michelle says:

Teak LOVES this kind of stuff. And the more ways I have to keep her busy, the better! She’s very good at finding the toys, but since she’s a pug it’s pretty funny to watch her mash her face in there!! All her current “find it” toys have been mangled by her big brother, D, and the rotating group of foster dogs. Teak would love a turtle toy!!

  3. Nic says:

Gimli would love this! He pretty much destroys any cloth toy with a squeaker, but boy-oh-boy does he have a good time in the process. :)

  4. Kristin says:

Lily my golden reteiver would love this-she can figure anything out. She is always letting herself or my other dogs outside and will even open the dog to let them in! Now if she would just close the door too.

  5. I bet Finnigan would love this- he’s starting to appreciate that squishy squeaky toys aren’t for ripping apart as fast as possible, but for enticing others to play with him. I would love to play hide and seek with the little turtles, too, making a game out of how quickly he can find them and bring them back. I can see hiding treats in the shell, as well. Lots of different ways for the turtle to keep my boy entertained.

  6. Breanne McEntee says:

What a great toy! I know Irish would figure out where the little turtles are and tear them apart before we knew it. It is his mission to destroy all stuffed animals.

  7. Stephanie says:

I can’t believe I didn’t know this toy existed! I have a pit bull named Turtle, who is the biggest baby and scared of the world. “Tough Turtle” was made for her!

  8. Leah Ashley says:

Ajax would go nuts for this toy! She loves squeaky toys for the squeak and squishy toys for the chewability and she loves things she can rip apart and this toy has all of those things! The tougher outer shell sounds like it would be great too so that she wouldn’t be able to rip it apart quite as quickly. You’d think reasonably made squishy toys could stand up to a shi-tsu, but not this one!

  9. Deanne G says:

My dachshund Louie would LOVE this! He is toy obsessed. My greyhound Niko is always the first one to get a new toy and he licks it, prays to it, and squeezes it once and then Louie gets the toy because Niko has then lost all interest. Louie keeps the toy until he can figure out how to make a carcass out of it and it usually is pretty quickly! I would love to see him try to figure out how to get the squeaky toys out! That would definitely be worth taking out the video camera for!

    Thanks so much!

We have a wonderful sheltie named Angel.

  11. mickeyfan says:

Miss Sophia Loren is an aussie shep who loooves toys, and especially toys that either squeak or are stuffed animals. My husband goes nuts because when she’s at work with him “she squeaks her toys for hours on end”…yet when they break, he always buys her a new squeaker!

  12. LW says:

Niji is my Shepard Husky rescue dog, and although he’s a medium energy dog, he is super smart and can get himself into a lot of trouble when he’s bored. You can tell if he’s bored, too! He’ll collect as many shoes as he can find in the house, then piles them on his bed. It’s a warning sign that he’s about to start chewing on things he isn’t supposed to.

Then there’s Bettie, my beautiful pit bull rescue. The most darling and loving dog you will ever meet, but she’s ULTRA high energy. Seriously, it’s nuts. She’s so hard to wear out! We’re going to teach her to swim next spring so she’ll hopefully have a new activity to drain those energy reserves of hers. (I wish we could teach her this fall, but it’s October in Minnesota. Everything is going to be frozen over any minute now, anyway.)

Toys like this are fantastic for both of our dogs, even though they have pretty different personalities.

  13. Leann S says:

Blaze is a terrier and would love this. He loves stuffed toys that he can shake and kill. Right now he is perched on the back of the couch looking out the front window. He has been hanging around the cats too long I think.
Phoenix is a Golden and loves her toys. We call them her babies. She won’t go inside or outside without her latest toy. I think she would love this most of all.
Blaze was adopted at petsmart and Phoenix came from the pound. They are the best dogs ever.

  14. Jacqueline Strawder says:

Midnight, Twilight and Starlight our three labs would have a ball trying to find the squeekers! What a great toy!

  15. Sherri B. says:

Belle would absolutely love this!!!! She is a short-haired retriever mixed with who knows what. She was dropped off at the dump and some friends of mine caught her and since they know I can’t say no to an animal, she ended up at my house. She was full of fleas and worms and scared to death when I got her. A little over a year later, she is a very loved member of our family. Well, the cat still isn’t very fond of her, but at least there is no bloodshed…LOL. Thanks!

  16. Renee H. says:

My puppy, Yuki, is a 5-month old Siberian Husky/German Shepherd Dog mix. She’s got a lot of energy, and when she doesn’t have something to keep her occupied, she becomes a little bit destructive! Something like this seems like it’d be great for her.

  17. Kristy says:

My 2 chihuahuas, Yoda and Laia, would absolutely love this. They play tug of war with all of their new toys.

  18. Emmi says:

Belle would love this. I’m always amazed at how clever she is.

  19. Carol Lawrence says:

We have 5 chihuahuas and an old terrier mix mutt. The dogs have two totes filled with toys and anytime the muttley Jellybean and the chihuahua Bandit go outside they have a toy or stuffed animal in their mouth. They run around,do their business and come back in still carrying the toy.

  22. McKim says:

We have two dogs – Cinnamon, a 10 year old red border collie that is an absolute sweetheart. Then we have Freckles – a 2 year old Hangin’ Tree Cowdog. She’s a sweetie too, but a wild one! Both dogs love to play, and love stuffed toys. They tend to “gut” them within a short time after receiving them though!

  23. Paula H says:

I have a dog that we rescued off of the internet. The vet said she’s a chi/beagle mix that is about 2 years old.. She’s full of energy and loves squeaky toys and things she can chew. Roxy usually hides her toys in her crate or under the covers in her bed. Her absolute favorite thing is to sleep in the sun.

  24. Kimberly says:

I have 2 chihuahuas. Colby is the “typical” chihuahua, about 3 lbs and scared of his own shadow. He has a very short list of people he likes (boyfriend, sister, and me. no one else). I could see him playing with this and then snuggling up with it for a nap. Kirby is a 10 lb long haired chihuahua that has the loving, outgoing personality of a lab. If he’s lucky, Colby would share this with him. :)

  25. shawna says:

We have Foxy our Beagle and Sugar our Rat Terrier..she thinks she is human and has to sleep with a pillow and blanket. She also thinks stuffed toys are her babies and will carry them around and play fetch with them

  26. Elaine R says:

My daughter has 2 dogs,a tsichiu and a black lab puppy. Both dogs have lots of energy and love chewy, squeaky toys!

  28. Bambi M says:

I’m sure my sister’s dogs would love this! One of them is a Jack Russell who loves to play and he’s smart enough to have figured out how to open a bag of chips! I bet he’d have a great time getting to the little turtles! :)

  29. Amy says:

I have a 7 1/2 year old black Labrador, while he is a big boy weighing in at 80lbs he has no desire to play with big boy toys. My dear back lab Jet with his handsome white beard loves nothing more than his “babies”. Any stuffed toy will do but he will walk around the house with one of his “babies” in his mouth and he will cry and cry until you tell him how pretty it is and pet it. He has even, on occasion, been caught licking his “babies” clean. He may be neutered but my boy is one great papa dog!

  30. amy delong says:

ooohh, Leilani, my rat terrier would love this toy!
Tug of war is her favorite game, as well as pulling stuffing out of things, maybe she can settle for pulling the turtles out!

  32. Anita says:

My two Poms Vada and Violet love to play with toys. They would love this turtle! I’m sure our cat Delilah would love to watch them figure out how it works. Looks like a great toy! Thanks AG out loud.

  33. Barbara Fox says:

My daughter’s wirehaired Fox Terrier would love the turtles! She is toy obsessed and this is right up her alley!

  34. Mya Brooks says:

Bear is my seizure alert dog. He protects me!!! I so want to give back to him by winning this!

  35. Carla says:

Baxter loves his hard plastic squeeking hamburger. He will bring it when asked, bury it somewhere, and dig it back up.

  36. Sheryl says:

Loki just made it through his neutering a couple of days ago. He is sick of wearing that crazy inflatable collar and this toy would be a good way to reward him for being such a good little Shiba.

  37. Lu Ann says:

I have 2 dogs a Shih-tzu named Emma and a Chihuahua named Coelee. Emma is 5 months old. She thinks all the toys are hers. She has them everywhere! She would love this toy.
    Thanks!

  38. Sarah C says:

My mastiff Mack loves squeaky toys. Whenever he hears this toy of my daughter’s that squeaks, he comes running and sits by her hoping she’ll give it to him. heh

  39. Sharon says:

Our golden, Gracie LOVES stuffed toys. One of the things I like best about her is that when she greets you at the back door after a long day of missing us she wants to present you with something. It really doesn’t matter to her if it is a toy or even a leaf. She proudly holds it up and says, “here, I found this for you!!!”

  40. Amanda says:

My boyfriend and i have a maltese and we also have catahoula lepoard dog (we rescued him from a pound discovered he was a bread later). Our catahoula, although a big boy, is so good with small dogs/ children although being thoroughly abused. He is just learning how to play (at 3 years old) and I would love to try out a toy that may actually keep him occupied and would last longer then a day. thanks!

  41. kathy pease says:

we have 3 dogs bella the chow chow, and 2 min pins chico and paco and they are just like family :)

  42. Jami says:

Our Puggle “Brinkley” is always up for a new challenge, and he is all about squeaky toys! I’m sure he would love a new toy since he usually ends up giving most of his toys up to our 1 year old!

  43. johnny says:

we got “oreo” from the Animal Shelter about 5 Month ago. He is now 9 Month old and his name should be “destroyer” lol :) unless its a Tough Toy he destroys it . thanks, hope we win.
