I am totally freaked out right now. Last night I woke up to an owl making his little “hoo hoo” sounds on our deck. I thought I had heard one several months ago, but hadn’t heard anything since so I didn’t think much of it. Now I know there is at least one around. I could hear it spread its wings and fly off too. This FREAKS ME OUT because I know that they have been targeting small dogs in our area. I think the most horrifying thing would be to watch your dog be taken by an owl or some other predator.
I found this article that talks about owls and small dogs. I was shocked to hear that they will attack even ten pound plus dogs. I’m wondering if there is any deterrent that I could put outside? So far, according to my research, I haven’t found any way to keep them away and it’s illegal to harm them. (I’m not one to harm any animal, but if this dang thing gets anywhere near my dogs I’m going to be out for blood.) Anyone have any ideas? This is seriously keeping me up at night.

This happened to a friend of mine who has a whippet. He saw the owl in time, before his dog got carried away, but the poor thing had claw marks in it’s back. Unfortunatey, about the only thing I’ve heard you can do is to create a covered dog run to keep the birds out. Not exactly an easy fix.
I think I might have told you that I’d heard of this happening down here in Phoenix! Anyway, i heard that putting up those fake owls (I’m not sure what they’re made of…) deters them from hanging out near your house. Not sure if it’s true or not, but it may be worth looking into…
